Two Nights in the Hills Above Naples

Telese Terme · Caiazzo · Sant'Agata de' Goti  ·  2–4 October 2026

A short escape built around one dinner.

The Idea

Most people who fly into Naples turn south, towards the coast and the crowds. We're turning north instead, into the Caserta hinterland — a landscape of tufa ridges, olive groves, and small volcanic-soil vineyards that almost nobody bothers with. It is the other Campania: quieter, slower, and entirely unbothered by coach parties.

The whole trip is arranged around a table for two on Saturday evening, forty minutes up the road, in a village of fewer than six thousand people. A single dinner that justifies the flight. Everything else is deliberately, unapologetically slow.

Where We're Staying

Aquapetra Resort & Spa · Telese Terme, Benevento

Not a hotel so much as a small stone hamlet that someone restored properly — and with rare restraint. Buildings faced in local rock, an outdoor pool that earns its place in the landscape, an art gallery tucked between wings, and a park large enough to walk without meeting anyone. It sits in the broad Telesina valley with the Matese mountains rising behind it, cooling the evenings earlier than the coast ever does.

There is a spa, and a restaurant — La Locanda del Borgo — that holds a Michelin star without making a fuss about it. The plan is to use both generously, and to leave the grounds as little as possible. Two nights here is not a base for exploration. It is the destination.

Friday: Arrive Slowly

The Journey In

Land at half twelve. Collect the car from Avis at Capodichino, join the SS Telesina heading north-east, and watch Naples dissolve into hillside villages and open farmland. Check in by mid-afternoon — comfortably, without rushing.

An hour's drive that already begins to feel like the other Italy.

The Rest of the Afternoon

The pool. The park. Whatever the spa has open at that hour. The grounds are designed for exactly this kind of purposeless afternoon — the sort that turns out to be the most restorative part of the trip.

Dinner

At La Locanda del Borgo — the starred restaurant on site, a short walk from the room. Which is exactly the right distance after a 4:30am alarm and a morning of airports.

Saturday: Do Very Little

The morning belongs to the spa. There is a massage already booked, which is the correct way to spend the hours before a significant dinner. A light lunch follows at La Loggia — the kind of meal you choose with one eye on what's coming later.

Then, if the afternoon calls for movement: Sant'Agata de' Goti, twenty minutes east. A medieval town built along the spine of a tufa ridge so that from the valley bridge, the houses appear to grow straight from the cliff face — a sight that stops you mid-sentence. Beneath one of those houses, sixteen metres down into the rock, are the Mustilli cellars: the family that quietly rescued Falanghina from near-extinction in the 1970s, now run by two sisters who know more about the grape than almost anyone alive.

Saturday Evening: The Reason We Came

Pepe in Grani · Vicolo San Giovanni Battista 3, Caiazzo

Franco Pepe works out of a restored palazzo in a half-empty hill village an hour from anywhere recognisable on a tourist map, and people fly in from other continents for it. There is no mixer, no conveyor, no industrial efficiency of any kind. The dough is made by hand, every day, from grain grown within sight of the building, in a village of a few thousand people who seem entirely unbothered by the fact that this is one of the most talked-about tables in Italy.

The pizza is the product of forty years of obsessive refinement — the crust light and blistered in the right places, the toppings chosen the way a painter chooses colours. It is the kind of meal that recalibrates your expectations of a category you thought you already understood.

Table for two. Saturday, 18:30.

Sunday: Home

A last breakfast on the terrace, watching the Matese mountains hold the early light. Then an hour's easy drive back down the valley — the same road in reverse, which somehow looks entirely different on a Sunday morning.

The flight departs Naples at 13:20. Manchester by half three. Which is, it turns out, the correct way to end a weekend away: back before dark, with most of Sunday still in front of you, and none of it obliged to be useful. The washing can wait. The memories, as they say, cannot.

Getting Around

Everything here needs a car, and that is rather the point. There is no useful public transport in the Caserta and Benevento hinterland — no tourist buses, no shuttle services, no day-trip crowds arriving by train. The valley stays quiet precisely because reaching it requires a little intention.

The drive from Naples is straightforward and rewarding: motorway for the first stretch, then the SS Telesina winding through increasingly unhurried countryside. Once based at Aquapetra, all distances are short.

Distances from the Resort

Weather in Early October

Warm Days

Mid-twenties by day — warm enough for the pool without the oppressive heat of high summer. Light cotton is all you need before the sun starts to drop.

Cool Evenings

Once the sun drops behind the ridge, the valley air cools quickly and pleasantly. Something with sleeves for dinner — a light jacket or a linen layer is exactly right.

Largely Dry

Early October in inland Campania is reliably dry. The summer storms have passed and the autumn rains have not yet settled in. Pack lightly and confidently.

Two Nights, One Dinner, and a Valley Almost Nobody Visits

The coast will still be there. The crowds will be there too.
This is the other direction.

A weekend designed not to impress, but to restore. The best kind.
